The FrontAg Nexus Consortium has just reached another major milestone with the successful completion of its 2nd General Assembly, held in Amman, Jordan. From September 30 to October 3, 2024, partners gathered for four days of collaboration, knowledge sharing, and strategic planning for the future of frontier agriculture in the Mediterranean region.
This gathering brought together key stakeholders from across the consortium to discuss progress, exchange insights, and chart the course for the project’s next phase. The focus was on addressing critical challenges related to the Water, Energy, Food, and Ecosystems (WEFE) nexus, with an emphasis on fostering climate-smart agriculture that promotes sustainability, economic growth, and innovation.
Highlights from the General Assembly
- Demonstration Site Visit at NARC’s Middle Jordan Valley – Deir-Alla Research Station: A standout moment of the assembly was a field visit to the National Agricultural Research Center (NARC) in the Middle Jordan Valley. At the Deir-Alla research station, participants witnessed first-hand the real-world impact of the project’s work. The site showcases cutting-edge agricultural practices that aim to alleviate pressure on WEFE resources, enhance food security, and improve livelihoods. The visit sparked lively discussions and the exchange of fresh ideas among participants.
- Side Event on the Future of Insect Farming: A special side event highlighted the potential of insect farming as an innovative solution to sustainable food production. Led by expert trainers from Egerton University, this session explored how insect farming could contribute to addressing global challenges related to food security, resource efficiency, and environmental sustainability. The event provided a platform for partners to explore this emerging sector and its potential for entrepreneurship and job creation in the region.
Commitment to Sustainable Agriculture and WEFE Resource Management
At the heart of the FrontAg Nexus initiative is a commitment to improving livelihoods, creating jobs, and enhancing food security through innovative agricultural practices that balance the needs of the environment with those of local economies. By focusing on the integration of water, energy, food, and ecosystems, the consortium is driving sustainable development in the Mediterranean, one of the regions most affected by climate change and resource scarcity.
This assembly also marked a moment to reflect on the strides made thus far, and to reinforce the consortium’s dedication to the mission of easing pressure on WEFE resources. Through shared expertise, collective action, and innovative solutions, the FrontAg Nexus Consortium is helping to build a more resilient and sustainable future for Mediterranean agriculture.
