Advancing Climate-Resilient RUMinant Farming Systems INtegrating Genomics, Environment, and Management StrATEgies

Climate change presents a massive challenge for livestock farming. Cattle produce high levels of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, while pasture-dependent sheep increasingly suffer from severe heat stress as temperatures rise across Europe. To tackle this dual challenge, the RUMINATE project works directly with farmers, scientists, and industry experts in collaborative hubs called Future Farming Design Studios. Together, they will create practical, low-cost solutions that integrate animal genetics, nutrition, and farm management. Key developments include tailored feeding handbooks, custom genetic screening panels to easily identify climate-resilient animals, and a user-friendly digital Decision Support Tool. Instead of keeping science in the lab, RUMINATE tests these tools in the real world. The project is running six demonstration farms: three focused on reducing methane in dairy cattle (in Belgium, the UK, and France) and three focused on boosting heat resilience in dairy sheep (in Greece, Türkiye, and Romania). RUMINATE will provide immense value by empowering farmers to make confident, data-driven choices. The project expects to cut cattle methane emissions by up to 20% and increase sheep farm profitability by 10%, all while ensuring animals stay healthy and productive in a changing climate.
