The BioRural project, funded by Horizon Europe, has come to an inspiring close after three years of dedicated work. From the very beginning, its ambition was clear: to make the bioeconomy a real and tangible opportunity for rural communities across Europe.
At reframe.food, we are proud to have been part of this journey, supporting communications, storytelling, and engagement throughout the project. Our mission was to bring forward the voices, solutions, and ideas that make rural bioeconomy innovation both possible and impactful.
Empowering Rural Communities Through Communication
BioRural focused on three pillars: sharing knowledge, building networks, and creating business models tailored to rural realities. What makes this project stand out is how these goals were translated into practical outputs:
- The BioRural Toolkit, an online repository of bio-based solutions, enabling interaction between rural actors.
- The European Rural Bioeconomy Network, connecting innovators across Europe.
- A strong platform for success stories: 35 examples from 12 countries that showcase how rural people are turning challenges into solutions, from olive waste transformed into clean energy to natural fish feed and biodegradable products.
For us at reframe.food, amplifying these achievements meant ensuring that the voices behind the innovations (farmers, entrepreneurs, researchers, and communities) were heard across Europe.
The Spirit of Collaboration
What made BioRural truly remarkable was its collaborative spirit. With 19 partners from 14 countries, the project brought together researchers, policymakers, businesses, and communities.
reframe.food helped build bridges between these diverse voices, shaping a shared narrative that highlighted not just results but also the people behind them.
Despina Kampouridou, Project Manager at reframe.food, reflected that BioRural has been a journey of learning from early adopters and providers of innovative bioeconomy solutions—people who persist, adapt, and overcome difficulties to turn ideas into reality. Throughout the project, she had the privilege to connect with key actors across Europe, engaging in conversations with primary producers, exchanging viewpoints, and amplifying knowledge sharing. Despina describes this as “an invaluable reward” that not only broadened perspectives but also strengthened the collective spirit of collaboration. Above all, she highlights the experience of working with such a dedicated consortium: “an unparalleled experience with an exceptional team — one we would gladly do again and again.”
Nefeli Raftopoulou, Communications Manager at reframe.food, added another perspective, focusing on the human side of this journey: “For me, the most rewarding part of BioRural has been the community we built. Meeting innovators, visionaries, and passionate people who not only added value to the project but also to our daily lives over these three years has been a true joy. Beyond the results, it’s these connections and the sense of shared purpose that will stay with me.”
A Lasting Impact
Looking back, the legacy of BioRural is clear: rural Europe is already leading the way in building a circular bioeconomy. By highlighting local resources, practical solutions, and strong networks, the project created momentum that will continue to grow beyond its lifetime.
At reframe.food, we are committed to carrying this spirit forward, supporting European projects that give voice to communities, showcase innovation, and drive sustainable transitions.
To all the partners, stakeholders, and rural innovators who shared this journey with us: thank you. Together, we have not only demonstrated what Europe can achieve but also inspired future pathways for the bioeconomy.
